Ouverture
With its checkerboard patterned border and musicians captured in mid-performace, “Ouverture” is a clear companion to "La Fenetre" ("the window"). The musicians in each of these pieces are not looking outward at the viewer, but instead off to the right or left, so when the two etchings are placed side by side it is clear that they are watching each other play. Boulanger’s keen sense of color is richly displayed in both of these etchings, ranging from shimmering opalescent quality of the background to the bold primaries in the clothing, instruments and deep red of the sheet music in the foreground. There is a rhythmic and geometric feel to the composition of this piece, not just in the checkered border, but all the shapes and curves of bodies and instruments working together and interlacing in a playful and spontaneous way. All the elements in this piece are masterfully crafted, and exhibit her great skill and technique in the etching medium while staying true to her personal style—never losing her sense of play and whimsy that is so essential to her work.
